The Youth Sports Game-Day Checklist
Everything to pack the night before, plus a simple pre-game timeline so you are not scrambling in the parking lot.
Most game-day stress comes from the same three things: a missing item, a late start, and a hungry kid. Pack the night before and use a simple timeline, and the morning gets a lot quieter.
The night before
- ☐ Uniform: jersey, shorts, socks (and a backup pair of socks)
- ☐ Shin guards (soccer), cleats or court shoes, laces checked
- ☐ Full water bottle in the fridge, labeled with your kid's name
- ☐ Ball (if the team asks players to bring one), pumped up
- ☐ Weather layer: rain jacket, hoodie, or sun hat
- ☐ Sunscreen and a small first-aid basics bag (bandages, wipes, an instant ice pack)
- ☐ Confirm the time, address, and field or court number from the team message
- ☐ Check whether it is your carpool or snack week
The parent bag
- ☐ Folding chair and a towel or blanket
- ☐ Phone charged, team contact list saved
- ☐ Extra water and a simple post-game snack
- ☐ Hair ties, a spare pair of socks, a plastic bag for muddy cleats
- ☐ Umbrella or shade if it is a long tournament day
A calm pre-game timeline
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 2–3 hours before | A normal meal your kid is used to. Game day is not the day to try something new. |
| 60 minutes before | Bag in the car. Quick check: shoes, guards, water. |
| Arrival time the coach asked for | Usually 20–45 minutes early. Drop off, let the team warm up together. |
| Kickoff / tip-off | Find your spot on the parent side, settle in, and enjoy it. |
| After the game | Water, snack, and a simple "I loved watching you play." |
